How to use a dial-up modem when ADSL is not available

The instructions below apply to Windows systems.

  1. Left-click on "Start" in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen. Left-click on "Run".
  2. In the pop-up box, type in "inetwiz", and click "OK".
  3. This should open the Internet Connection Wizard. Select the first option, "Connect using my phone line". Click "Next".
  4. If prompted, select the modem you are using and click "Next".
  5. Type in your Pay-as-you-polka POP number, 0822455000 in the telephone number section.

If you need to dial a zero (0), or any other number, to access an outside line (e.g. dialing through a switchboard), then the 0 or the other number that you need to dial must be in front of the area code, followed by the PoP number.
    i.e.: 0, code, number (0,0822455000).

Select South Africa in "Country/Region name and code".

Uncheck the "Use area code and dialing rules" box and click "Next".
  6. Fill in your Pay-as-you-polka username (i.e. your full polka email address) and your password. Note that the username and password are case-sensitive.
The username is always in lowercase. Click "Next".
  7. Type in the connection name of your choice, e.g. Polka. Click "Next".
  8. Where it prompts you to set up your internet mail account, select "Yes" and click "Next".
  9. Type in your name and surname, or company name (capital letters, or in lowercase).
When someone receives an email from you, this name will appear in the ‘From’ section of the email. Click "Next".
  10. Type in your email address in lowercase and click "Next".
  11. From the drop-down list, select "POP3" as your incoming mail server type.

Type in the following details in the "Incoming and Outgoing" mail server names in lower case in their relevant spaces:
       Incoming mail – "pop3.polka.co.za"
       Outgoing mail – "smtp.polka.co.za"

    Click "Next".
  12. Fill in your username (i.e. your full polka email address) and your password.
Note that the usernames and passwords are case-sensitive.

    Selecting "Remember password" is optional.

Do not check the "Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)" box.
    Click "Next".
  13. Click "Finish". Now, you are ready to dial up to the Internet using Pay-as-you-polka. Standard cell-phone rates will apply and will be billed to your telephone account.
